But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
The angel told Mary to trust God. And he told Joseph to obey God. And angels told everybody they came in contact with, even the shepherds, not to be afraid.
Remember Zechariah, who was startled and afraid? The Word of the Lord, however it comes to us, can be surprising and even a little scary.
But the angels aren’t just saying to not be afraid of the messenger. They are saying not to be afraid of the message.
Hear the Word, they say. And do it.
Don’t be afraid.
