Advent, the first Thursday

Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

He will be called Immanuel, which means God with us. It wasn’t just a name, it was a truth. A child is coming and He will be God. And He will be with us. Right here, with us.

Many faithful children of Israel were waiting for this moment, including Simeon, an old man who hung around the Temple every day, waiting to see and hold and bless the promised child: “My eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people,” he said.

Or Anna, the 84 year old widow who worshiped daily, praying and fasting. She wasn’t longing to see the baby, although she was glad to see him. She was longing for God to be with us.

Immanuel. God with us.
