Advent, the first Wednesday

Isaiah 9:6-7
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.”

A child is born to us.

That is the simple and delightful truth of the Christmas story. But this is no ordinary child. This child carries the weight of government on His shoulders and, in fact, of this world, and the one to come. Everything depends on Him.

He is the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Israel placed a lot of stock in this child, and looked forward to Him, and longed for Him.

He would reign on David’s throne, “establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.” That’s a lot to expect from a baby.

Thankfully, this was no ordinary baby.
