Advent, the first Tuesday

Isaiah 11:1-16
“A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.”

Jesse was the father of David, the much loved and celebrated king of Israel. But the prophet Isaiah says there is more to Jesse’s lineage than than that. Not only a king but the king will come from him, a branch that bears fruit.

Jesus was that fruitful branch, the true vine, the greater King. It’s a truth he pointed out to the Pharisees in Matthew 22. They told him the Messiah would be the son of David, which Jesus was. He pointed out that David also called the Messiah Lord, which He also was.

This Messianic prophecy pointed to Him.

They all did.
