Advent, the third Tuesday

Luke 1:18-19
Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.” The angel answered, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.”

What do you do when the word of the Lord comes to you? It is not uncommon to ask, “how can I be sure?”

Gabriel offers a proof that fits those heavenly messengers who stand before the throne of God and do his bidding. But it also fits the prophets and the writers of Scripture and others who stand in the presence of God, and who are sent to tell us His good news.

We can have confidence in those who stand in His presence and listen to His voice, even if they are not angels. And it’s OK to ask questions, as long as we are willing to listen to the answers.
