You can see what Hemingway wanted but never had: a clean, well-lighted place where the shadows are held at bay. Add an unhurried and sympathetic waiter and perhaps your nothingness will disappear.
celebrating a son-in-law
My son-in-law and I disagree on some very important things, although I have forgiven him for breaking my toe, dropping my daughter’s hope chest on it. But I have learned to love him.

There are innocent people in jail, and there are even more guilty ones on the street. But in the end we are all at least partially protected by the system from capricious power and emotional judgments.
