I have a productive life, but it hasn’t produced much money. And practically no assets. So I wonder if I need any, and how much effort I should put into acquiring them. And I wonder if it’s too late. And I wonder if it matters.

Health is not the only issue that concerns me as I approach the half-century mark of my life. Something else that seems to matter is money, not so much that I have it as that I understand it. Which I don't.

I was only going to weigh myself once a week, but I sneaked a peak over the weekend and it is not encouraging. Why can’t you cheat and lose weight too? Why can’t five good days count more than two bad ones?

The Physician Assistant's clip board is on the examining table, and she leans close, earnest and professional, asking questions about my health history as though they weren�t already in the file, as though I hadn�t said the same thing a dozen times. She seems unconcerned that my dad just died of a heart attack.

It's an interesting concept, an annual check up. For me, it comes in January, when many people are doing some sort of reviewing and planning anyway. It's a time for resolutions and regrets. And for remembering.
